So its valentines tomorrow and although I dont really buy into all the gimmicks in the shops it is fun to acknowledge it and have an excuse to bake something yummy. Its the perfect time to get creative and make something you wouldn’t usually make. So this year Ive made these watercolour cookies which are a little bit rough around the edges but they were very satisfying to make and I think packaged up in a little box they will make a lovey little gift. So why not give them a try, I went for a galaxy theme but you could do heart shaped cookies with a floral watercolour effect or just let your imagination run wild really.

  • Cook Time: 10m

  • 100 g Unsalted butter
  • 100 g Caster sugar
  • 1 Egg beaten
  • 275 g Plain flour
  • 1 tsp. Vanilla esscence
  • 2 tbsp. Icing sugar
  • 250 g Ready rolled white fondant icing
  • Pink, blue and purple gel food colouring
  • Vodka
  • Edible silver stars

  1. To make the sugar cookies preheat the oven to 190c/gas5/375f. Line a baking tray with baking paper. In a bowl cream together the butter and sugar. Now beat in the egg and vanilla a little bit at a time.
  2. Stir in the flour and mix until forms a ball. On a floured surface roll out the dough to about 1cm thick. Cut out different size cookies and place on the baking tray. Bake for about 8 to 10 mins and then leave to cool fully on a wire rack.
  3. In a bowl mix the icing sugar with 2 tbsps of water. Roll out the fondant icing and cut out the same amount and size circles as you have cookies. Put a dot of runny icing on the cookie and place on the circle of fondant icing press down into place.
  4. Using a star stamp, stamp on a few decorative stars. Now for the watercolour effect place a few drops of the gel food colouring on a plate to use as a palette and pour a shot of vodka to use to mix and dilute the colours. Now get creative at the end sprinkle on a few silver stars. Leave the cookies to set and dry.
    • Thank you Ruby. Im not really into valentines day either but I like using it as a reason to be creative or bake something. x

  • These cookies look magical Rebecca! 🙂 I love the little galaxies, so much more original and beautiful than the typical heart-shaped treats or super pink/red cupcakes. I don’t know if I could get the hang of painting cookies with a small brush, my hands are too big for such detailed and delicate work and I suck at drawing or painting, hahaha.
You did an AWESOME job! <3

    Happy (and sweet) V-Day!

    • Thanks Gemma you definitely dont need to be good at drawing to make these the messier the better. Happy valentines to you too xx
